About yCG
Young Caregivers Programme – yCG
With the elderly population increasing in Singapore, there is a growing need to raise awareness and inculcate in our youth the values and benefits of building meaningful relationships with the elderly and elderly sick. This is especially important as many of our youth are raised in nuclear families with little contact and communication across generations. This could lead to a growing intergenerational communication gap.
Also, we have already seen among our patients that some students are themselves the main caregivers in a family. Given our rapidly ageing population, there is a very high probability that youths will be gradually and increasingly responsible for caregiving in the near future. We feel that nurturing them to be good caregivers from an impressionable age will help them develop into sensitive, socially responsible adults, mindful of elderly needs and aware of palliative care.
By promoting intergenerational understanding and communication through yCG programmes, youths are encouraged to evaluate family situations and realign their thinking to channel into positive actions. Youth who are sensitive to elder needs will be able to make responsible decisions within their families and develop into socially responsible individuals.
